Thanks voyager.

Armed with this information I called the US embassy info line and they pretty much confirmed everything you just said.

One thing they suggested I do is first ask for a TD for my wife, as we co-own property here in Canada and have for many years. This might prove a long-term relationship with intent to return to Canuckistan and they might give her a TD. If that fails, she can request the long-term B2 status.

Even if she doesn't get that, she can take the regular 6 months status, and then jump in and out of the US to renew that visa, for an hour or a day, when that time is up. According to the chap who answered the phone.

We won't be doing this for a few weeks, but when we do, I'll come back to this forum and tell you all how it went.
