TN - Management Consultant

Post Thu Nov 01, 2007 10:35 am

I am about to renew my TN visa. Last year they whisked me in practically no questions asked. But for this 2nd time, I'd like to make sure I am well prepared. Does anybody know what duties and tasks fall under the management consultant position?

We use the old DOT (Dictionary of Occupational Titles), the O*NET (Occupational Information Network) and the OOH (Occupational Outlook Handbook) when analyzing a position. The classic definition is a combination of the DOT descriptions for management analyst and consultant:

Consults with client to define need or problem, conducts studies and surveys to obtain data, and analyzes data to advise on or recommend solution, utilizing knowledge of theory, principles, or technology of specific discipline or field of specialization: Consults with client to ascertain and define need or problem area, and determine scope of investigation required to obtain solution. Conducts study or survey on need or problem to obtain data required for solution. Analyzes data to determine solution, such as installation of alternate methods and procedures, changes in processing methods and practices, modification of machines or equipment, or redesign of products or services. Advises client on alternate methods of solving need or problem, or recommends specific solution. May negotiate contract for consulting service. May specialize in providing consulting service to government in field of specialization. May be designated according to field of specialization such as engineering or science discipline, economics, education, labor, or in specialized field of work as health services, social services, or investment services.

And:

Analyzes business or operating procedures to devise most efficient methods of accomplishing work: Plans study of work problems and procedures, such as organizational change, communications, information flow, integrated production methods, inventory control, or cost analysis. Gathers and organizes information on problem or procedures including present operating procedures. Analyzes data gathered, develops information and considers available solutions or alternate methods of proceeding. Organizes and documents findings of studies and prepares recommendations for implementation of new systems, procedures or organizational changes. Confers with personnel concerned to assure smooth functioning of newly implemented systems or procedure. May install new systems and train personnel in application. May conduct operational effectiveness reviews to ensure functional or project systems are applied and functioning as designed. May develop or update functional or operational manuals outlining established methods of performing work in accordance with organizational policy.

Thanks for the link to that article TNVisa Expert. What I will have with me is:
1. my BA degree (and a transcript of my grades)
2. my resume
3. the letter of employment which lists my duties which also goes over my qualifications
4. letters from previous employers dating back to 1999
5. a letter of support from the sanctioning body which my organization operates with
6. sample of articles from Canada where I was featured as a key leader in my community (you know, proof that I am a good citizen and such)

I think I should be covered. The very first time I tried to get a TN Visa I had nothing but my 2-page resume and the 1-page letter of employment. The officer simply saw the little amount of info I had and assumed I was not well prepared and turned me down in a fraction of a second. This time I have more of the over-kill approach. This is such a nerve-killer. I am thinking I should have simply done the I-129 from the employer.
