TN Profession: Research Assistant or Engineer?

Post Mon Jul 20, 2009 3:01 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be starting at a US university as a postdoctoral researcher in an engineering department under the TN status. My Bachelors, Master's, and PhD degrees are all in engineering. My official job title will be "postdoctoral associate."

So, my question is, do you think it would be better to use the NAFTA status of "Engineer" or "Research Assistant"? Any thoughts on the advantages or disadvantages of each?

Thanks in advance.

Engineer is one of the more heavily scrutinized categories, but clearly you obviously are a qualified engineer. You also clearly fall into the research assistant category too by the sounds of it.

Whatever you think is best based on the job offer letter I guess.

Thanks a lot for the response.

I was slightly concerned with using Engineer when the job title was Postdoctoral Associate. Does this seem like an issue? Maybe its slightly more straightforward to use Research Assistant.

I think it depends on the job description. If you're going to be doing mostly research, I would go for research assistant.

Thanks, that makes sense. The job description is for a research position, so I think that Research Assistant is likely the better option.
