TN Renewal -- turnaround time?

Post Fri Feb 29, 2008 2:34 am

I'm in the US (san francisco) and need to return to canada (vancouver) in march to get a new TN visa (which i've done several times before). the 'renewal' comes at a crazy busy time and i'm wondering if it's terrible idea strategically in terms of re-issue to fly to vancouver and return the same day. i could stay overnight, but it would be so much better to go, sit around at the airport and return.

any thoughts on if/how this might compromise my odds?

thanks!

You can apply for renewal from within the US, but it seems going by the comments on here that it takes months so it's probably not the best option. Someone else said they went to the Mexican border, it was faster.

ya, thank! i definitely think it's best/easiest/cheapest to leave the country to renew, and have definitely heard that it looks best if you return to canada.

i guess i'm asking how bad it looks if you leave and return the same day!

Well, considering that they've set it up so the only way you can renew it is to go to the Canadian border, I shouldn't think that doing it all in one day would be frowned upon at all.

Forgot who it was who posted, but someone posted on here they applied at the border in Texas and didn't have a problem.

There is no requirement that you stay a certain number of days in Canada before renewing.

Definitely, when you return to Canada and visit friends and family it indirectly shows ties to Canada and works in your favor, but this is not a requirement.

Many people (at a border crossing) park their cars on the American side walk across the border, turn around and apply upon entry into the U.S.

Unfortunately, everything is subjective -- them more you can do that works in your favor the better your chances for success. That said it may be to your advantage to renew by mail - remember the cost to renew by mail vs. staying in the U.S., making money for the next year, etc. may be worth it.

Good Luck!
