I believe you have 2 options to renew (or re-apply) your TN.

Option 1 is to leave the country, show up at a border crossing and re-do everything you did last year when you obtained your visa (your degree, previous employers letters, your passport, your current letter of employment, anything else that could help you out like if you received any special awards or recognition in your job during the past year, etc.). Renewing is NOT a guaranteed thing, remember that.

The 2nd option is by filing the I-129. I believe your employer files this form for you, you do not need to leave the country, and you have up to 240 days to wait for the decision as you continue working under the same conditions.

Last year I applied for my TN at the Detroit border, no questions asked, the Officer was joking around the entire time, I walked out of there, Visa in hand in less than 30 minutes. A dream! This year I applied for my renewal in Cornwall, they studied my case for 2.5 hours, and denied me. I am beginning to believe it does not matter where you go, it depends 100% on the Officer's mood.

If you have no need to return to Canada for a while, I recommend the I-129 option of renewing from within the States, but do this asap, you cannot submit this with only a few days to go on your visa.

Good luck!

Most of the time you're better off renewing the TN with USCIS. I've never had a problem renewing a TN with USCIS. The ports are unpredictable unless you go to a high-quality port and see the Free Trade Officer.

Make sure you have your degree (education credentials)

Here is some more information regarding the documentation you will require:

Good Luck!
