TN status and Nexus

Post Wed Oct 22, 2008 1:33 pm

Hello all, this is my first post - excellent forum.
I am currently considering a job offer in Atlanta, I qualify for TN status and intend to begin work down there (currently in the Toronto area) under the temporary status until I'm sure that things will work out and can go the green card/permanent resident route.

I have a wife/young kids that will stay in Canada for a short time while I begin work there, probably a few months, and currently own a home as well that we would have to sell if we move permanently. I am obviously planning to return often for weekend trips to visit, and am thinking of getting a Nexus pass to speed things up and potentially avoid hassles that others seem to have had elsewhere on this forum. I am wondering if this possible under TN status? or even worthwhile? I currently hold a TN for another (Canadian with US offices) employer for short-length assignments and I've never had any problems.

Yes, you can do this. I got my NEXUS card before getting my TN. Once I returned to Canada I simply updated them at the NEXUS office, you don't even need an appointment. Just make sure you always keep every detail updated with them or you'll lose the card.

Yes, if you are in a non-immigrant category that doesn't require a visa (which is nearly all of them except E and K and a few others), you have to go to the NEXUS office and have the category you've been allowed in under to your NEXUS card.

Hi,

I am relocating to the United States for work in about two weeks. I am going to be driving, and will be applying for TN status at a land crossing, I have all the necessary documentation, and I'm not too concerned, except for the (apparently vague) requirement to demonstrate proof of non-immigrant intent, but I think that has been addressed elsewhere in the forum

Here is my question:
A while back, I applied for Nexus. I've just received conditional approval and need to have my interview. I live in Toronto, but there is no way to get a Nexus interview at the airport before I enter the US for work, the first available slot is at the end of August. However, the border crossing I intend to use when I enter the US for work can also do Nexus interviews. Is it possible to do both at the same time or is that potentially jeopardizing both processes? If it can be done, do I need to get the TN first, then proceed to the Nexus interview?

Or, should I just schedule and go to for the Nexus interview asap (there are slots available immediately at nearby land crossings), and then deal with the TN when I'm ready to enter the US for work?

Any info or advice would be much appreciated!

I would get Nexus first, however you might mention that you are about to get TN.

Neither should matter.
