tn status freelance

Post Tue Sep 07, 2010 2:23 pm

I used to work in new york as a fulltime graphic designer under the TN status, but recently i decided to move back home to Montreal and start freelancing. I've been getting inquiries to freelance in the US (in-house), so i've started reading if this was possible at all. I'm a bit confused though.

If i understand correctly you can "freelance" as a Canadian citizen in the US under the TN agreement as long as you get a contract and a TN status for every job you do? And that you call yourself an independant contractor? If that's right, does that mean you can use the 1099 tax documents as if you were a US freelancer?

thanks for your help!

I'm not an admin. Ask your question there.

Howeever, as a TN you are allowed to freelance, but you absolutely need a separate TN for EACH client you work for.
