TN Status Letter Wording

Post Thu Jun 30, 2011 2:55 pm

I was worried about the wording of my TN status letter, so I got my future employer to reword it. It now states:

"...wishes to offer employment to Ms. X as a full-time Teacher in the ABC School of Whatever for a period of up to three years, effective September 1, 2011. It would be beneficial for Ms. X to arrive by August 1, 2011 to facilitate course preparotory work with full access to the University's resources."

Obviously, I left out my name and the name of the university for privacy reasons.

Will this wording be enough to:
1) get me approved mid-July (even though the starting date is officially Sept, I need to be there by Aug)
2) get a 3 year term on the TN status?

Thanks!

As we've discussed earlier, this wording *might* get you in by mid-july, and -- if it does -- the TN will expire in mid-July 2014. The border simply cannot give you a TN for more than 3 years from the date that they stamp the I-94.

It still would be much simpler if the school would say you start in August.

Expect your SSN six weeks after initial entry if you work this correctly.

Thanks AGN,

I'm aware of the mid-July expiry, that's ok, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

The wording is the best compromise we could reach, something about the letter having to have the same "official" start date as my contract, but at least they're stating that they need me there earlier.

I'm going down in about 2 weeks, I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks again!

In theory, the letter should be fine. As Ag has stated we will give you only three years from the date we give you the TN. As far as getting it in July....maybe. If it were me, no problem. In my opinion its your loss if you obtain it early as your expiry date will be shorter than you need, thus your problem. Sometimes, but not always, you could run into the "You only get the TN if your coming to work now" officer. Don't worry, there is only a few of them. I see no problem as long as you qualify and the school is legitimate.
