This is great advice. Its easy to avoid thinking about options beyond other than TN/TD.

Being on a TN has actually helped my career so far because future employers know that TN's are cheap and easy. A lot of companies are refusing to sponsor employees for visas, apparently..

Provided we're on TN/TD, is there a preferred track for obtaining GC? I guess this is why I posted this topic, because I'm transitioning to a new company and if there is a better visa that we can take advantage of strategically, now might be a good time.

There are great immigration forums and websites out there that talk about GC.

immigration.com, immihelp.com. See there.

Yes it definitely helps early on and that's why IMHO a lot of Canadians make the mistake of staying in TN status too long.

Agreed. I think there is a basic point here that Canadians often miss. Things can seem to be "going well" on TN--as the OP says--but then years go by and eventually you wonder why you aren't advancing in your career. It happened to me, I've seen it happen to other Canadians, and I could see it happening to the OP/his wife.

This issue is unique to Canadians because they often stay on TN (and tie themselves to the limitations of the TN) for too long. It is true that an H-1B is often unnecessary for Canadians but I would still encourage them to move forward with the GC. Indian and Chinese immigrants in the USA avoid the same trap because they aren't eligible for the TN and the time limitations of the H-1B force them to move forward on the GC.

The TN is a great tool for the first years in the USA but as a long term strategy it has its limits.

Can't agree this any more! But, is it possible to switch from TN to GC?
