TN Visa - 3 year work exp. proof (Computer Systems Analyst)

Postby rkg » Sat Sep 19, 2009 2:42 pm

Hi there,

I've been scouring the forums, which are great by the way, but I have one question I was hoping some seasoned TN-status pros might be able to provide some guidance on....

I'm a Canadian with a diploma from an Ontario College (the diploma states "Computer Science Technology - Software Engineering" as the program name). I understand I need to have atleast 3 years work experience in an Analyst capacity to go along with the diploma, under the Computer Systems Analyst category (I've been working for almost 5 years in an "analyst" capacity). My question is: What is sufficient proof of employment for the 3 years? Letters from previous employers, official Record of Emplyment forms?

Thanks in advance!

Letters of reference from the other employers are preferred, but a list of prior employers and their numbers can also be accepted.

Thanks lawsrlaws,

Just to clarify:

Should I contact my previous employers to write new reference letters, that would be more suitable for the TN-status evaluation at the border, or would just a standard reference letter that one would use domestically suffice? (I already have these letters from my past employers)

The reason I ask this is, from other threads/sites I've read, the impression given by some is that Computer Systems Analyst individuals are put under more scrutiny-- and usually they are trying to determine that you are just not just a 'programmer', and may look to these reference letters as evidence of 'analyst' type work in your past.

A CSA can do no more than 20% programming duties otherwise the Free Trade Officer can interpret the application as being a Programmer, which is not a NAFTA Occupation.

Your reason for obtaining the letters/proof is merely for backup purposes in case the DHS wants to see it and wants you to prove it.

I would be more concerned with being refused as a CSA with a Software Engineering major but there is some degree of interpretation allowed that goes on in these kind of adjudications so it may depend on whom you encounter.
