TN VISA 3 Years Vs 1 Year

Postby GoldisRising » Sat Oct 03, 2009 6:06 pm

Just a quick question anyone thinks this will be an issue as far as the CBP is concerned? From various forums i have heard its not an issue or it shouldn't be an issue?

Just wondering if anyone sees otherwise

Oh i know it can be issued for 3 years, my question was is it a good idea to go for 3 years instead of 1? My company's lawyer just informed me their are more rejection on 3 years Vs 1 year. He recommends to get a 1 year TN from a POE

He's making more complex than needs to be.

And tripling his fees, if you think about it.

I could not agree more with Agnelson. The main thing is being able to show non-immigrant intend. I dont see why there would be more rejections on 3-year TNs.

I personally would not have moved to the US on a 1-year TN. I dont see the point of uprooting my life for that short a period. Time flies, and before I know it, it'll already be a year that I've been down here. It's stressful enough as it is moving and reestablishing everything, I would not want to have to deal with applying for a TN yet again after a year, either having to drive to the border, or send it in the mail 6 months ahead of time etc.

I had had work offers in the US when TN's were for 1 year and I was never interested in going.

Bottom line is, go for a 3-year TN, you'll be glad you did.

first of all thanks to both of you.

I have actually been in the US for a while now and i am really thinking about moving back to Canada. Its just that it really sucks to be on a Visa, you can't buy a house being on a Visa, now a days the interest rate sucks otherwise i could have been happy gettin g 5% interest.
Think about it you save all the money and then in the end get .25% interest woopie. If i move back to Canada i might get paid a little bit less but at least i don't have to worry about Visas and border crossings etc.

Every year i renew my TN and then worried if i'll get the next TN or not. One little technicality on the letter or a officer in a bad mood and that's it for us, our lives can just change.

How can one show ties with Canada, i have my bank account, trading account, health card no Canadian license ( i just let it expire) as its illegal to carry 2 North American Licenses in Ontario. I can take all this and the officer can then just deny and ask me to get a lease which c'mon if your living in the US why would you keep one in Canada?

I guess this is a common problem we all face.
I will go to Buffalo to get my TN, Rainbow is horrible. I heard Sarnia was good too.

"you can't buy a house being on a Visa". Not true; it may not be practical, given the tenuous employement status, but TN is not a bar to buying a house or getting a mortgage

"How can one show ties with Canada?" You're not required to have any ties to canada on TN. Just the promise to leave when out of status.

I have bought a car since being here. It's cheaper than buying in Canada and when I move back, I'm just taking my car with me as personal property. Of course, I made sure to get a car that wont need many adjustments to satisfy Canadian standards.

As for property, I'm actually thinking of buying a condo/house. I'd just rent it out when I leave or then again, sell it.

It's true that there is a lot of uncertainty on a TN, but its nature of the beast. I get the feeling of weariness and I can see why you'd want to go home, but for me, and for the time being, it works. Everyone's different when it comes to life management. Maybe I lack in that department :D

I'm wondering why you insist on going to the border. Why dont you file for a 3-year extention in the mail? It's less time consuming than to drive all the way up and it's my guess, you'd be less at the mercy of someone else's mood. If time is of the essence, I do believe there's a premium service that costs aroung 1K (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

If you like your life as it is in the US, try your best to get it set for another 3 years and use those years to think your next move through.
