TN Visa and Car Loans

Post Tue Feb 15, 2011 4:30 pm

First post here...

I am working under TN in Michigan for almost 3 years now, I am working in automotive sector(and survived the craziness...lol). I am trying to purchase a new VW vehicle and ran into some issue with my TN status. The dealer told me that VW will only finance for a foreign person for their duration of stay in US. My current TN(1 renewal after the first year, then it was renewed til 06/2012) has about a year and a half left which means unless I put down a huge down payment for a $25K car I will be stuck with very high monthly fee(18 month, 10k down will mean ~$900/month, I am aiming for ~3-400/month, which will need $18K). Tried to go to Chase Bank whom I have checking and saving accounts with and they told me the same thing. I am wondering what other options I might have? There is always the option of just wait til my TN renews again for hopefully another 3 years then I can at least get a 36 month loan, which combine with a high-ish down($12k will hit my acceptable spot).

Anyone with similar experience can share maybe what they did or find in their experience?

I got a car loan for 3 years through Wells Fargo.. with only my 1 year TN visa.. Visa never really came up.. You must have a SSN?

I had some basic US credit established; secured credit card + bank of america ex-pat credit card , but no history yet on the major credit report agency. Yours might be better since been here longer..

I am paying 16.9% interest which is ridiculous, but I'm paying it off very fast and wanted the loan more to build my credit history (could have put it on my credit card for less!).

A friend of mine was offerred the car loan through an Auto Finance of Car Dealer for the duration of his visa. Where as, in my case, I got it without any reference of any visa at all. So, it purely depends. Good Luck.
