TN visa and SSN

Post Fri Nov 10, 2006 5:14 pm

Hi,

I think I have seen this somewhere else on the forum but I just wanted to double check it again:

My husband just got his TN visa. He can apply for Social Security Number right?

If yes how long does it take to get the number and can you start working as soon as you apply or do you have to wait until you receive the number?

Thanks

He can go to any SSA office with his passport with the visa stamped in it and apply for the SSN. They can give him a letter that day saying that he's eligible for it, and has applied, then he can start work.

Getting the SSN card will take anywhere from a week to who knows when. Some offices are quicker than others.

Is this the only way to get the SSN with a TN? On the SSA website, it says noncitizens apply for the SSN with the immigrant visa application. Since the TN is granted at the border, I'm assuming the only way to get the SSN is afterwards at an SSA office. Correct?

this is the only way. You are not making an "immigrant visa application" since that is for permanent residency. You have a non-immigrant status (proof of which is your TN I-94).

And as steven pointed out, you need to wait a week or so before making the app, to give time for CIS to get your TN into the database, so hat when SSA looks for you, they will find you on the first try.

I have a TN and am about to apply for an SSN as well.

Once you have an SSN, are you required to file taxes with the IRS every year?

What if my TN expires and I am no longer working in the US?

Thanks!

Only US citizns and GC holders are required to file forever. Otherwise, once you leave US, you are no longer required to report in US.
