TN Visa: Any issues driving a US plated rental car to Canada

Post Sat Dec 31, 2011 2:02 pm

I have a TN visa. I would like to fly from my work place to Buffalo and then rent a car from there to my home in Toronto, return ticket to TO is 825 plus, to BUF is 300. I will be returning to buffalo in a couple days.

Will the CBSA have any issues with this ? I have heard that Canadians are not allowed to drive US plated rental cars into Canada.

I am a Canadian citizen and have a Canadian drivers license, residing in the US.

If anyone has experiences with a situation like this, please comment.

Most of the threads on this subject here are a few years old.

Thanks

As long as you LIVE in US (which means state DL), you can bring US registered car into canada for personal use. Its Cdn residents that can't bring US cars in without formally importing them.

You should not have a Cdn DL at this point since you work and live in a US state. That was a mistake on your part. You need to fix this now. You can't be a US resident with Cdn DL for much more than a month an all states, if working.

I got my TN a month ago. There is a good chance that the same position will open up in canada in the next couple months and I have the option of going back.

Also, here in texas, I have to surrender my Canadian license and only then can I get a Texas DL. I have an enhanced DL from Ontario.

My Canadian license number is tied to my driving history, car insurance ( I still have my car in my home in Canada) and so on.

I m afraid all that will be in jeopardy once the Canadian license is cancelled.

You have 30 days to register in TX.

They don't really care about the so-called enhanced ON DL that you may have.

And you will now have trouble at the border if the CBSA asks to see your DL.
