TN Visa for CCIE Network Engineer

Post Thu Jul 22, 2010 10:06 am

Hello

Can any one tell me what are the exact requirements for a Canadian applying for TN visa against a job offer for a position of Network Engineer or Customer Network Engineer? I am looking for details like: what should the job offer description say. What category do Network engineers fall under for TN? What educational qualification / certification is required? Is experience required and how many years? Does having certification like CCIE help?

Hi Angelson, Thanks for the information. Is Bachelors degree in Engineering a must. I read the following from web....

Education Requirement: The applicant's employer must submit proof that the applicant meets the minimum education requirements or has the alternative credentials set forth in NAFTA agreement, chapter 16 appendix 1603.d.1. Evidence of professional qualifications may be in the form of degrees, certificates, diplomas, professional licenses, or membership in a professional organization. Degrees, diplomas, or certificates received from an educational institution outside the United States, Canada, or Mexico must be accompanied by an evaluation by a reliable credentials evaluation service specializing in evaluating foreign documentation.

Will CEng ( chartered engineer UK) or MIET plus CCIE plus 15 years of experience in the industry be sufficient .

Are there any lawyers you may know that have handled a case specific to network engineer TN Visa with no engineering degree but only certification and experience and professional membership based on experience. Please let me know.

Thanks again!

Hi Kp123,

It shouldn't be an issue given your experience and certifications to qualify for the TN visa but more detail would obviously be needed. Your best bet would be to speak with an evaluation company to ensure that you qualify for the role within NAFTA guidelines. That should be relatively easy but the fun part is finding the company to sponsor you so you can actually get the TN.

One needs to remember that experience does not count toward TN at all -- except if one has a North american diploma (non-Bachelors) and related experience.

Without a related degree (your degree may be related) experience does not count one iota.

So anyone who answers your question by " your experience and certifications to qualify for the TN visa " is suspect.

Thatsaid, your degree should suffice.

A professional designation such as a degree that states "Network Engineer" could be acceptable for a TN-1. You could enter as an Engineer or possibly Computer Systems Analyst depending upon the courses taken showing on the academic transcript.

The degree is the only thing that counts. A certification alone is not eligible for a TN-1 and won't swing it. If CBP grants you a TN-1 with a certification alone, that TN can disappear (be revoked) just as quickly by another CBP Inspector who does know what he/she is doing.

Certifications will not be considered on your application, you need to meet the education requirements (3 year diploma + experience, or related degree). Network engineering can usually be construed as being computer systems analyst. Just be sure your offer letter uses the proper TN category as your title.
