TN Visa Holder - Personal Duty/Tax Exemption

Post Sun Jan 20, 2008 10:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been working in the U.S. for 3 months now on a TN visa. When I bring purchases made in the U.S. into Canada, am I eligible for the personal duty/tax exemptions that are based on whether you've been away from Canada for 24 hours ($50 exemption), 72 hours ($400 exemption) or 7 days ($750 exemption)?

Thanks!

Depends on whether you a resident of the US or Canada, which basically boils down to where your DL was issued although technically it is more complicated than that (but the way most people show residency is via their DL). If you have a Canadian DL, they'll consider you a resident of Canada and thus subject to the personal exemption. If you are a resident of the US, you will be subject to the gift exemption for non-residents.
Steve.
