In 2006 I went on a TN Visa to work in California. I am planning on staying another year or two bringing my total stay to 5 or 6 years. I called revenue Canada before I left and they told me as long as I wasn't a resident I need not file taxes in Canada and being away for that long was definitely proof I was a non-resident. Also:
- No property in Canada, no address
- No dependents or spouse in Canada
- No drivers license in Canada
- DIdn't renew Medicare Card
- Rarely visit except for weddings, no ties at all
- All of my Canadian accounts (bank investments)have my California address
The one thing I do have are some investments in a bank account, student loans, and a Mastercard that always has some sort of balance (which I did to keep a credit score in Canada)
Anyway, should I have filed my taxes in Canada too? WHY? I haven't even used any benefits or services from Canada? That's too stupid!
Also, I paid my taxes and Social Security and everything as if I were an American resident which is BECAUSE I'm using the benefits of the US NOT Canada.
Please verify that I'm correct here by not filing Canadian or "world" taxes. Sounds like a huge inconvenience.
