TN visa - registering a car in Michigan and commute

Post Thu Jun 03, 2010 8:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I searched the forum but was not able to find a clear answer to my questions.
Facts: - canadian citizen working in Michigan on a TN visa. I live in Windsor so I commute to (near) Detroit on a regular basis. I sometimes spend days at the time in US but my wife and son line in Canada.
- I have an US address, SSN & MI drivers license
Q: I want to purchase a vehicle from Michigan and keep it registered with MI plates - but drive it as personal vehicle to/from work. On the US side I'm told that is not a problem. Would I have problems entering Canada (almost daily) with that vehicle? Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thank you.

You live in Windsor -- thus Cdn customs will not let you bring in the car at all unles you import it. And when windsor cops see thecar more than a few nights at your home, they will 48-hour you to get it plated in ON.

Its debateable whether you are entitled (or should have bothered with) a MI DL; your MI address is not much more than a cottage. Your ON DL should be sufficient.
