Dear All:

Bon Jour.

I'm a Canadian as a Student in the U.S. and would be switching to TN shortly. I would be located in Southern California. Can anybody advise me if I have to go to the Canadian Border or can I get my TN visa done at the Mexican Border? Look forward for your kind guidance. Thanking you all. Merci.

Sincerely,

Kumar

are you planning on leaving the US at all between the student visa and the TN visa?

Call your local USCIS office and make an appointment, or check their website for how to make an INFOPASS appointment. They *might* be able to help you. But I think you have to go thru the Canadian border for a TN.

I am not planning to leave the U.S. but my employer says that in order to get a TN visa, I'll have to go to Canadian Border. But, as I would be in Southern California, I was just curious if I can go to Mexico Border as it would be quite nearer then Vancouver, Canada, right? But, if it is required, I will have to go to Canadian border if I have to. Thanking you.

I found this in old posts and want to give it a bump in the hope that Kumar (or anyone else) ever tried this.

I considered this at one point, then thought better of it. It seemed like a phenomenally bad idea to come across the Mexican border and want to deliberately spend time in Secondary.
Still, I want to know if anyone has tried it.

Technically, you don't need to come into the US from Canada to get TN.
You just need to find a way to position yourself in a USCBP POE.
Now normally this is the preclearence station at YYZ, YVR, etc. or overland at the 39th.
AND that is where you will find Officers that actually know what paperwork to fill out.
But I have actually done it arriving on an "international" flight at LAX.
And let me say, that while it took forever (because no one knew how to process it) the officers were friendly beyond belief. Seriously.

Hi

You do have to leave the U.S. when applying for the TN visa. You can go to a Mexico border crossing that has a Port of Entry which processes TN Visas (for example. Tijuana's San Ysidro). Always call to see if they process TN Visas.

There are drawbacks to doing this, especially if you get rejected. (ie. You may have to stay in Mexico, if the officer does not want to let you in as a visitor after you've been rejected -- you get the idea).

Also, the suggestion to phone ahead and make an appointment is a very good one. Make sure to do this.

We recommend the safest option which is to use a Canadian Port of Entry. Though we don't wish it on anyone, if you do get rejected, at least you'll be in your native country, Canada.

You can get more information/articles at our website to help you be well prepared.

Hope this helps

I had to cross the border to change from student visa to TN and each year I renewed TN visa. Was easy for me as I was near the border, but the while thing is a bit silly.

Good luck!
