TN visa

Hi everyone! I am a dentist who will be working in the States under a TN visa. My employer is proposing me to be an independent contractor and not a W-2 employee. Can I work as an independent contractor under the TN visa? Being an independent contractor is so common in dentistry that this is bothering me a lot! THank you!!
