to get things clear on marriage/work visas

Post Tue Oct 11, 2005 6:35 pm

ok.
so if i am canadian and am married to
a boy from the UK then do i need to get a workingholiday visa to move from Canada to England with him?
or do i get a spousal visa and that will still allow me to get a job in England?
and there was some talk about the English Husband having to have lots of money and a house..is this the only way i would be able to get a spousal visa? we are both quite young (23) and would be both moving back none too rich and without a destined home or jobs to go to. (as it often is when moving to a new city, at least for mostly everyone i know!)

please and thanks for the help!

Hi Ella,

If you are already married to a British you should apply for a spouse visa which will give you also the right to work. First your visa will be good for 2 years but if you are still with your husband at the end at this period it is quite easy to apply to stay permanently in the UK.
The working holiday visa has a time limit and also you would be allowed to work only 6 months in total (I think) out of the time.
More info here :http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1018721067257

As your husband is going to be your sponsor he will needs to show that he can support you.
So he doesn't have to earn a lot just work full time and doesn't have to own a house just have a place where you can stay.

I was in the same situation over 5 year ago so. I married my husband in July 2000 in Montreal. We did not apply right away because he had to go back in England to find a job in order to show that he could support me financially. He was previously working for his father but it was not "official" and we could not prove this so he went back to find a job where he could have wage slips to show. If I remember it right he had to show the last 6 weeks of wage slips. So we waited that time before applying.
I think I must have applied at the end of Septembre 2000 and it took about 6-7 weeks to have the answer back.
Here the documents that I remember I had to send with the application:
- His wage slips and my wage slips
- Bank account statements (for both of us)
And because he was living with his parents (they own the house) they have to show the mortgage statement showing the house belong to them.
They had to write a letter saying we could stay with them as long as required.

One time I phoned the home office to know how much money they expected us to have in our bank accounts but they said it depends of each case. So to give you an idea : I had about $6000 CAN and my husband did not have much at the time so a friend loan him £5000 (or £10000 ...not sure anynmore) to put in his bank account.

I also had a phone interview.

I think that if you want to be accepted your husband should go to UK first to find a job and a place to live and after you should apply for your visa.

If you have more questions I will do my best to answer them !!
