to interrail or not to interrail?

Post Tue Mar 27, 2007 12:06 pm

After what will be 11 months of living and working in London, I'm planning my second backpacking trip the very beginning of September. The plan this time is to fly to Amsterdam stay for a couple of days and then move on to central/eastern Europe: Germany, Austria, Switzerland,Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia. My main question is transportation between destinations. I'm wondering if an interrail pass is worth it, I used a eurorail one before, but found the supplements high. Another option is to fly in and out of each country via a major airport and use trains within the country. I'll have roughly 3,000 pounds saved for this trip. Thanks.

Go for it!

The trains are expensive, and interrail passes are cheaper than eurail passes. If you qualify for it- i think you need to show a EU residency permit.

Trains in Hungary are cheap but the trains between say Prague and Budapest are a little expensive.

I'd go for it for sure.If you plan on hitting up a lot of places. Flying is ok, but you end up wasting a lot of time at airports, ya know? The train is always a little more interesting.

I would recommend that you purchase the Austrian OBB VORTEILSCard or German Deutsche Bahn Jungencard. It's basically their discount card/scheme in which you save up to 45% on rail fares. I purchased one when I was in Salzburg at the train station and you are provided with a temporary card/paper until they process your card.

You will need a wallet sized photo so make sure you have on upon arrival or you can register and upload your photo online. The card is worth it for the countries and cities you've listed - check it out! (triple W) dot oebb dot at and triple W dot bahn dot de (I hope you can read some German or at least have it translated. There is little to no translation on their site for the VORTEILSCard.) You can also register for it at the train stations. Good luck!

If you have an itinerary or are looking to make one, please don't assume that you should alter your plans. Call the travel bureau, chamber of commerce or a business in the area you're considering. You just may be very pleasantly surprised.
