To work or not to work...the money question

Post Tue Jan 16, 2007 9:12 pm

Im sure you guys get this a lot
but I cant decide whether or not I have enough money to last me for 3-4 months in Europe
Ive read that you should plan on the average day costing $75-100
is this right? I plan on landing in the UK and then going to many countries; Fr, Sp, Ger, It, and maybe more. Would it be difficult to get an under-the table type job while Im over there? such as cleaning hostels etc. to make a bit of extra cash? Or should I definetly apply for a visa and hope to find a job that only lasts a few weeks so I can continue on my way?
and p.s. does it cost money to get a visa?
thanks so much

For sure. The $100 range sounds good, and will give you some room to enjoy yourself.

Finding under the table work can be difficult, but make some local friends and keep your ears open in the the hostels. Some pubs and hostels might need some help.

Me again,
okay Ive read all the info on working holiday maker visas
but how much does one cost? I hear its $500 is this right?
Sorry, Im just trying to determine if it would be worth getting or if I should
take the chance and try to find temp jobs where it's not needed. Also its not possible to get a working holiday maker visa for a bunch of European countries is it? You can only choose one country?
That really isnt cool, anyways please reply
thanks!

Hello,

I would not advice to "work under the table" if you get caught you will have a big fine to pay (thousands of pounds or euros) and you can get banned from some countries.

I think the working holidaymakers visa cost 85 pounds for the UK (about $190 CAN which is nothing). With this visa you can stay up to 2 years in the UK and work for one year (and travel the rest of the time).

"Also its not possible to get a working holiday maker visa for a bunch of European countries is it?"

No it's not possible they are all different countries and different laws and different type of visa, it's someone saying they want to travel to north America and asking if they could have a visa for the USA and Canada.but they have different laws and visas , the same as Europeen countries.

You could apply for a visa to one country and when you need some money you go there for a few months and work to save some money and travel more.
