I'm graduating this year and plan on backpacking France and Italy for the summer with a friend, I am having a few minor set backs though because I will still be 17 when I go. I talked to a travel agent who told me that many hostels need a note from my parents before they will let me stay there. I am wondering if it would be better to wait a few years (which I do not want to do) but if not wait, is there any advice for a young backpacker?

Hi there,

I was 18 the first time I went. I went solo and had a blast. But I was certainly unprepared for a lot of things (especially the amount of money that I needed).

Most hostels don't care about age - Unless it's HI (hostelling international) which can be a little anal about that type of thing. I remember meeting some girls that were 17 and they didn't seem to be having any trouble.

That being said though I'd maybe wait until you're 18. Drinking age in many bars and clubs is 18 (though it isn't necessarily enforced). Plus it'll give you time to save some more money and figure out what you're doing.

Good luck!
