Transferring Auto Insurance Records.

Post Tue Jun 05, 2007 9:56 am

So I've used the CAD to USD AmEx trick to get my American credit rating started.

Now I'm trying to get my Auto Insurance up to par instead of starting from scratch. Is there any auto insurance companies in the NYC area that will allow me to have a better standing with them, with a written letter from my previous Ontario Insurance company?

Actually, I've already gotten the letter, but will they accept this and start me off with a rating that's better than someone who is just newly insured?

Thanks

I would start by getting your NY driver's license since you can just trade in your Canadian one and pay the fees.

I phoned around and basically asked insurance companies up front if they would take Canadian experience. Some said yes, some said no. Geico doesn't. I think All State and State do.

As for charge cards, we got direct pay deposit and had platinum visa cards in a week.

Thanks for your help. I plan on getting a NY license, the NJ one requires a written test :D Allstate and State, will keep that in mind thanks.

It's going to be another month or so before I start to look for a car and insurance, just want to be prepared.

Again, thanks for your help :D

State Farm said they could view my Canadian Driving record! Not sure if that is true, but when i was added to my wifes policy (USA citizen), her rates didnt goup! Were in VA! But when it comes to any type of insurance, best to sit down, grab a coffee and start phoning various companies. And soem cangive quotes via the web as well.

You can get a copy of your driver abstract from MTO for only $12 I think it was. I took that with me to the insurance company and to the local licensing office so that I wouldn't have to do the road test ;) (which is sometimes a requirement in some states, check the DMV website to be sure).

We have our insurance through State Farm, and because I had a policy with them in Ontario, they considered me a renewed policy, rather than a brand new one. If your current insurance company has offices in the US, you may just be able to switch.
