Hi - I just signed up today! And was wondering if anyone can tell me if you have to take a formal test to get an Australian licence or is it as simple as filling in paperwork? I thought about getting an IDP but I have relocated so it will not work out so well in the long run!

Thanks.

HI Tracy,

I moved to Darwin NT from Calgary. Ill be here for a year or so. My Canadian licence was good for three months then you need to get a state licence. turns out that Canadians just have to bring thier current licence in, proof of where you live and your passport, and tada, you get an Aussie licence. No hassles! Jsut a small fee and you can choose to get the licence for a year or 2 or more and pay accordingly.
Hope this helps!

It does vary from state to state so I'd double check to be sure. But I do know that it's an easy swap in New South Wales and Queensland. I think it is in South Australia as well.

As the previous poster said I just took my passport in along with credit cards with my name and a rental agreement with our address and they gave me a new licence. I should also note that they handed back my Canadian licence unharmed.

Update:

I contacted the License Bureau in Adelaide and was advised that I was able to drive in South Australia with a CDN license with no time limit as long as it was a valid license. Because my CDN license is due to expire soon. I only have to go in with my passport, CDN license, proof of address, debit card with signature or credit card and I can get a SA license without a test. So - this does make it alot easier and no worries about taking a test after so many years! Hope this helps someone esle :)

And if anyone is curious about their CDN license expiring and not being able to renew the photo . this is what I found out regarding Ontario anyhow: I would like to clarify that the ministry may issue a temporary driver’s license if you are eligible to receive one. Your eligibility is determined when the ministry reviews your driving record. A driver whose license has expired for more than one year cannot get a temporary license unless he/she reapplies for a license in person in Ontario. The allowable period of validity for the temporary license will be within one year when the license expires.

If you will be returning to Ontario after six months, you may contact the jurisdiction in which you are staying about the possibility of obtaining a driver's license from that jurisdiction.

When you return to Ontario, you can apply for a driver's license at that time. If your Ontario class G driver's license has expired for less than one year, you are not required to do any test to renew it. In this case, the renewal can be processed at any Driver and Vehicle License Issuing Office. If the license has expired for over one but less than three years, you must pass a vision test only at a DriveTest Centre before a license may be issued. If it has expired over three years, you must pass a vision screening, written and G1 and G2 road tests before a class G license may be issued.

The ministry does recognize previous driving experience in accordance with the existing regulations. If the class G license has been expired for more than three but less than 10 years, the driver does not have to serve the mandatory time periods under graduated licensing.

I wonder if the reverse applies when going back to Canada. Could you swap your licence from Australia for a Canadian one, especially if you have an expired Canadian one.

I hope to keep my Canadian one current. But it might be hard to be a non-resident for tax purposes and renew your Canadian licence. I'll definitely ask about that next time I go back.

Before I came over I inquired about that as well. They advised me that it would be a straight swap with the Australian licence as long as it was valid.
