Transferring student to ancestral visa

Dear All,

So far I've been unable to get an answer to this so hopefully someone here has first hand experience. I'm currently living in the UK on a student visa which expires 31/12/2008. My funding finishes before this so I'm planning to head back to Canada in May to get an ancestral visa so that I can return to the UK and take a full-time job. Is it possible to get an ancestral visa before my student one has expired and if I'm already technically living here?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi James

Here is what you can and cannot do. You ARE eligible to get an ancestral visa before your previous visa has expired. I have done this with no difficulty. Unfortunately you cannot switch to the ancestry visa while you are still in the UK. Any application for ancestry needs to be done in your home country.

Now as you stated you were planning on heading back to canada it would be best if you applied for it while you were back here visiting. The turn around time once you get your biometric data taken is incredible so you should hopefully have your visa by the time you are ready to head back to the uk.
