Hi!

Im canadian and lived in the Uk for 2 years, had to go back to Canada after my working holiday visa ran out. After 5 months, Im now back in London with a fiance visa. Because I lived in the Uk for 2 years, i wasnt covered by the health insurance in my province back in Canada.

Even though i moved back for 5 months, my stay wasnt long enough for me to be covered by the health insurance again. So now my question is: How do I buy travel insurance? who do I buy with?

2 years ago, before i left Canada, I purchased my travel insurance and didnt have to worry about anything. But now, because im no longer eligible for the health insurance from back home ( assurance-maladie) i cannot purchase my travel insurance from Canada. And because im not a Uk resident, i cannot purchase travel insurance from a uk company.

Im just so confused right now! I plan on staying in the Uk after my wedding and i wonder if i still need to buy travel insurance?! Im not a uk resident and and I dont live in Canada anymore.

Can anyone please clear my head up!?! If anyone from Quebec could answer me it would be even better! As they would understand what im talking about when i mention the "assurance-maladie" ! but any help would be appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Someone desperately in need of an answer!

Do you mean insurance for holidays? Or basic health care insurance?

If the later, contact your local GP. They'll be able to help you get registered etc. You need to have been in the UK for 6+ months before you qualify for care on the NHS.

Why aren't you a UK resident? You're here on a valid visa, living in the UK, doesn't that make you a resident of the UK? I'm not up on the Visa rules.

I know its confusing. I meant travel insurance. I think a visa gives you the right to get in the country. It doesnt make you a resident.or does it?! I have a Gp, but i still want to know if I need some travel insurance as im not a Uk resident and i will be here for another 6 months. I dont want to take any chance. I would like to know if I need it or not. If so where do I need to buy it from? From the Uk or Canada?!

Thank you for your reply!

hi i am from montreal and living in the uk.
i qualified for an nhs number through my visa.register with your local gp and you should be fine. a nhs number is like medicare card in quebec(the sun one)
i know exactly what you are talking about when you say you have lost coverage in quebec, i believe it is the same for all canadian provinces.if you still dont understand cal the uk offices in canada or the canadian embassy in the uk they can answer specific questions for you.

ps- resident and citizen are 2 different things, if you live in the uk the majority of the time you are a uk resident, you reside here, but you are still a canadian citizen.

you will only need travel insurance if you travel outside of the uk
any medical needs (doctor visit, hospital etc. should be covered by nhs)
