Trying to attain UK citizenship-don't have parents passport

Postby dabt » Wed Mar 03, 2010 9:44 am

Hi, I've been trying to find someone who can answer this question (I hope my question is alright for this site).

My mother was born in England in 1930, she passed away in 2004 (my father was canadian, now deceased also). Our family does not have her passport. I was born in the 1960s. I do have her birth and death certificates, my parents marraige certificate, and my birth cert also. I do not have any other documents related to my mom. I have the proper ukm forms and know that I must apply for 'uk citizenship by descent' in my case.

How do I go about acquiring a 'UK citizenship by descent' in this case? I tried calling the consolate in Ottawa and they do not accept questions, quite annoying. they simply refer one to an automated msg which basically says to 'apply using the ukm form from our website', and that's about it... ...without proper input it's very difficult to attain this citizenship when one has a special situation.

I wish to attain the dual Canada/UK citizenship(by descent) for future purposes (work/travel), and honestly, just because it is within my reach. But I have this difficult situation mentioned above, which I can't find answers for.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As you have found, because it is your mother rather than your father who was British, you must first register as a UK citizen (using the UKM form) and then you will be entitled to request a UK passport, using the standard C1 form.

From what I have seen on UKM, you do not really need your mother's passport if she was born in UK. Her birth cert is the key and trumps any passport. And your birth cert showing her as your mother.

Unlike those of us whose father was british, you do not have to prove that you were 'legitimate' (ie. she was married) for citizenship thru mother.

You will then be a british citizen by descent thru registration.

Unfortunately, the UKM form is designed for those who are living in UK and wish to become citizens, thus the need to 'prove moral character', but that's the rules as they currently stand. Fortunately, you will be submitting this to the High Commision in canada, so they will be familiar with Cdn/UK citizenship rules, and there will be no question that your british-born mother was always a UK citizen.
