I am taking a leave from work after a very stressful year, and want to stay with a friend in the US for as long as possible. I'm thinking beaches and sun will be a nice change! As I won't have many expenses, I won't need to work there as have some savings to draw from. I will be giving up my rented apartment in Canada.
I am aware, however, that there is a 6 month maximum stay limit for Canadians.
At the moment, I am only a UK citizen and Canadian permanent resident, but my Canadian citizenship should be finalized in March. At the moment, I enter the US with a 1-94W that is valid for 3 months. I will be doing this at the end of January so will be able to stay until the end of March on the 1-94W before having to leave. I do have a trip planned to England in mid-February, so will most likely get a new 3-month I-94W when I return to the US in early March (so should be valid until May).
My question is: when I get my Canadian citizenship finalized in the Spring and apply for a Canadian passport, can I use this after my I-94W is no longer valid and stay for an additional 6 months?
I am hoping that I can come back to Canada at the end of May (once my I-94W has expired), apply for my passport/visit family, and then return to the US in July for an additional 6 months using my new Canadian passport (which is sooo much easier than a UK one from what I've been told). I am wondering if the US border would care or notice that I have already been in the US for 3 months of the year under a different nationality and passport.
Thank you!
