Hey everyone, I'm English and here to ask a couple of questions for a Canadian friend, who's currently staying with me. So, to my questions.

Q1: As I say, my friend's already here in the UK, on a months vacation, and has now decided she wants to stay and work here for a year before starting college back home in Canada, in autumn 2009. However, I've read somewhere that you can't apply for visa's whilst already here, in England. Is that true? Surely, there must be a precedent for this situation? I'm sure many travellers intend on just passing through and decide to stay longer to see more of the country or work a little while, to earn more travelling money, etc.

Q2: This question is regarding an Ancestry Visa. My friend's grandfather was from Southern Ireland. Would that family connection, still grant her working 'rights' in the UK? As Southern Ireland isn't part of the UK, but is an EU country?

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

-Sandy.

A working holiday visa is an entry visa, so you couldn't apply for it while in the UK.Same goes for an ancestry visa. You have to apply where you are a legal resident.

However, I was under the impression that one could qualify for an Irish passport if their grandfather was born there. Is this still the case? Worth googling about.

Yeah, her grandfather was born in Southern Ireland. I don't think she'd have any problems getting an Ancestry Visa, but I'm wondering if EU Ancestry still grants her rights here in the UK.

This might depend when her grandfather was born. If he was born before March 31, 1922 she is entitled to both a UK Ancestry Visa and Irish Passport.

From what I understand, it is quite a long process to get your birth registered for the Irish Foreign Birth Registry (up to a year or more wait time). Once she has her birth registered then it is just a matter of applying for passport. Yes, she would have rights to stay in the UK with the EU passport just as any other EU citizen does.

Cheers.

So, as far as anyone knows, there isn't a precedent for applying for a visa of any kind whilst already 'holidaying' in the UK?

I'm pretty certain there are no visas that you can obtain while 'holidaying' in the UK

As the visas are used for entry clearance and they need to do things such as biometrics beforehand, for working holiday visa she also needs to prove she can support herself for 3 months before she can go over

her solution is to fill everything out and she's going to have to fly home to apply
