two young canadians...

Hi Everyone, I am hoping to get some advice regarding Visas..
My boyfriend is planning to go to do his PhD in the States (Sept 2011). It is a four year program, and I would like to accompany him and work during that time. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Arts and Design, and Graphic Design experience (less than three years), but I am not sure that I fall under any profession in the NAFTA job list.
Also, if I cannot find a job before he moves there, can we get married and apply for a F-2 and then later upgrade to a TN once I find a job?
