U.S. Canadian Dual Citizen Getting U.S. Passport

I was born in the United States and both my parents are Canadian. When I was 2 my family moved to Canada and I have lived there ever since. My parents never got me a Social Security Number. I am looking to apply for a U.S. passport and one of the pieces of information required on the form is your SSN. I am required to apply for my SSN before I can apply for my U.S. passport?
