UK Ancestry Visa documentation requirements

Post Wed Jun 17, 2009 5:45 am

Hi all,

I had a few questions relating to the extent of documentation required to prove UK ancestry. I came across the following list:

1. Relevant grandparent's full birth certificate
2. Relevant parent's full birth certificate
3. Applicant's full birth certificate

Did anyone here have to provide marriage certificates???

My grandfather (from my mother's side) was born in the UK. Wouldn't his birth certificate, my mother's and mine be enough?

Is there anything in addition that needs to be included to prove British Citizenship, or is the birth certificate sufficient?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Steve

As long as your grandparent was born in the UK as opposed to just being a citizen. I will be applying for the same visa, and according to the gov website they do ask for marriage certificates. I will provide one for my parents at least. To me, it seems just an added incentive for the authorities to ensure ancestry.

Hi Steve,

I have just received my ancestry visa this week and I didn't have to provide marriage certificates. I suspect that they might require a marriage certificate if the lineage is on your mom's or grandmother's side as the surname would have likely changed from the birth record and this would show proof of that. Just a shot in the dark.

Steve,

I also applied through my mother's father and no marriage certificates are required. Your mother's maiden name appears on your birth certificate, so that should be enough.

My fiancé and I are planning to apply for a UK Ancestry Visa. I do not qualify, but my fiancé does. The documents we currently have are:
Paternal Grandma’s Birth Certificate (Norwich, England)
Paternal Grandpa and Grandma’s Marriage Certificate
Dad’s Birth Certificate
My Fiance has his birth certificate.
We have been applying for jobs and have an interview tomorrow but a few questions we need answered are:
How long does it take for the Visa application to go through once I have applied?
How long do I have to go get my Biometrics done?
Is the only place that I can get my Biometrics done in Edmonton? We are nearest to Calgary (Okotoks).
What if we get married before we leave but after we’ve applied for the Ancestry Visa? Does that change anything?
Do I need to apply at the same time as my fiancé?
What is an acceptable amount of funds required? Do they take into consideration Pension Investment funds?
Where do you get the digital photos done for the Visa?
We do not have an address yet, but we have researched rentals on the internet, does this matter?
Any help would be greatly appreciated…Thanks in advance!

hi mr.graham.
all of your birth certificates( your fiances, his dads, and his grandmas) need to be long form originals or notorized copies. All of the longform ones have parent information. I didn't need my grandma's marriage certificate ( i had the same ancestry for my visa)
The closest biometrics for you is in Edmonton. Once you've completed your online application you have 6 months to get your biometrics done. After 6 months your application won't be valid anymore and you'll lose your payment.
As far as your marriage status, I believe that you apply as a dependent on his visa. I'm not 100% sure on that part though as I personally haven't had to deal with it.
As far as funds, any and all are good. You need to have bank statements for the past 3 months, stamped by a bank teller. If you can get printoffs of RRSP's, GIC's, etc and have them stamped as well. You need to prove that you can support yourselves without access to public funds for 2 months. i believe its the equivalent of 800 GBP per person..
you can get photos done anywhere that they do passport photos. they don't need to be digital. However, the pictures required are smaller than passport photos and need to be current within the month.
Job offers and proof of accommodation is a definite bonus on your application. Any qualifications (i.e. degrees, diplomas, course certifications) that are relevant to your intended work are an asset.
At the time of your biometrics, they go over your application with you and make sure that you have all of the correct supporting documentation before sending it off. Its a super fast process once it gets to ottawa.
Best of luck to you and your fiance, and I hope i helped with some of your questions.
