So this is the email I got back from the consulate after I asked if there was any sort of activation time line that had to be honored. I dunno if this will help anyone, but. Hey, figured I'd share.

"There is no period laid down within which a UK Ancestry Visa should be activated, but we advise that the holder of such a Visa should enter the UK within 28 days of the date of issue. In practice as Visas now include Leave to Remain in the UK the Visa can be activated at any time as long as it is valid.

However, you should be aware that a UK Ancestry Visa holder is expected to be in five year's continuous employment in the UK in order to qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain i.e Permanent Residence (ILR).

If he or she does not meet this requirement he or she may need extend the Visa at the Home Office. Applying to the Home Office for an extension of stay can cost a minimum cost of £395 per person at present charges."

Wow that's interesting- it is so different from before. I never would have thought it would be so involved and regimented; I think I will wait to apply to be safe then - thanks again for all the great info!
