UK Ancestry visa questions

Post Sun Mar 13, 2011 6:23 am

Hello, I have a few questions about the UK ancestry visa. A few things:

a) my wife has been accepted to Oxford university
b) we are both Canadian and my grandfather was born in the UK
c) we are currently living in Ireland on a green card visa.

With that, my questions:

1. Can I work full time on my ancestry visa while my wife goes to university full time on the same ancestry visa? or does she need to apply for a separate student visa? It seems a single person cannot use an ancestry visa to study, but its not clear about a couple where one works.

2. Do I apply once and never touch it again for 5 years? or do I need to keep going back?

3. What if I don't find a job within 3 months? Is 3 months a magical number before they kick you out?

4. I am currently living & working in Ireland. Since I am Canadian, is it required that I apply from Canada or can I apply from Ireland? Traveling home just to make an application would be a huge hassle and cost me thousands.

As your UK Ancestry dependant, your wife will be allowed to study and/or work in the UK.

UK Ancestry visas are usually issued for 5 years. After this period you'll be allowed to apply for permanent residence (ILR) provided you meet the residence requirements.

Even if you don't have a job after 3 months you shouldn't have problems if you actively keep looking for one.

You have to apply from the country where your legally and normally resident. If you have been in Ireland for more than 6 months, you should apply from there.

Re: Marriage in UK on an ancestry visa

Post Sun Mar 20, 2011 3:39 pm

Hello there. I'm a Canadian currently living in the UK with my British boyfriend on an ancestry visa. We've been together now for almost a year and just recently got engaged. I want to get married to him here in the UK late next year sometime but wondered am I allowed to do that? Is there any special license or anything I need before I can go ahead with marriage? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

It's a multiple entry visa so there shouldn't be any problems.

Hi There,

I had a UK ancestory visa and then got PR and lived in the UK for ten years. I went back to Australia for some years and they revoked my PR visa for being out of the country for too long.

Now I am applying for me ancestory visa all over again and must produce all the original documents.

I have everything but cannot find my UK grandfathers birth Cert.
I have tried all avenues - BMD, Gro, family history websites, etc.
I called the same Visa service company that found the certificate years ago but they are mucking me about and say they now can't find it. I know this certificate exists as I had it in my hand ten years ago.

My questions are:
1 Is there some way my previous documents can be looked up by immigration, do they make copies of the originals and scan them into my file or something? it would then be much easier to find the original again as I would have more info to search with.

2. Are there any companies or visa service agents who specialise in finding hard to locate birth certificates? I have tried family history websites but their researchers charge a fortune - a couple of thousand dollars.

Any help on this would be appreciated as I am at a loss as to how else to find this document.
Thanks

Hi there,

I've been looking into my UK Ancestry visa. I'm currently in Australia finishing up my Masters degree, and my partner has just received news that he is to be transferred to London, and I am going with him!

I've got everything in order - my grandparents orginal birth certificates, my mom and I are ordering our long form birth certificates, i've already got enough money to show I can support myself.

I'm going to submit and pay for the application online before I leave here, then book a visa appointment to submit my application and do my biometrics on the day after I get back to Vancouver. So, my appointment is (hopefully) going to be July 20, and we are planning on heading to London mid-late August. Is this enough time? I have seen postings on here saying most people get approved within 5 days, but would like some advice on recent applicants.

Also, I am planning on sending in my partner's job contract in the UK - I think this will show that he is willing to support me while I find a job (if my own funds run out). Does this sound like a good idea?

As far as showing enough funds when I enter the country, I should have enough, but will also have some money coming in shortly, from some contract work I will be doing in July and also from my Supperannuation refund I will get from Australia (which is about AUD$2500). Do you think a print-off showing how much I am getting back from Australia will suffice as evidence of funds, since international transfers sometimes take a while so the money might not actually get into my account until I am in the UK?

Final question: the great job hunt question! I have already contacted a few recruitment agencies, so am planning to submit with my application evidence that I have already begun the job search. I will be a recent Master of Business (Marketing) grad upon my arrival in the UK, with experience in investor relations, corporate marketing communciations, event planning, customer relationship management, brand management, and logistics and supplier relations. Should I include my CV with my application to show that I have a wealth of education and experience and thus would be valuable to the UK workforce?

Thanks for any tips!

Hey all this is my first post so here it goes hope someone can help!
Basically
- Dual US & Canadian citizen
- Grandmother born in UK and have paperwork
- American passport
- Country of residency = US

My main question is if I need to pursue getting a Canadian passport before I pursue an ancestry visa? Can I get an ancestry visa with my American passport? I am a member of the commonwealth yet my passport is not. Also do I need to be in Canada when I apply for the UK ancestry visa. Hope I have my information right and am on the right path. I would love ANY AND ALL information. Thanks!

Mike

You would simply need to prove commonwealth citizenship, which would be Cdn birth cert or Cdn citizenship card.

Current residency does not matter.

Thank you! I have a current citizenship card. Will I need to apply from Canada or is it acceptable to apply from the US?
