I've been searching the entire internet for the answer to this question, and I think I've gleaned the answer from a few sources. Instead of hording this information forever, I thought I'd post it here so people can discuss it (if needed) and so the search trolls can pick it up for future travelers.
If you enter the UK with a Canadian passport but you are a UK citizen*, you still cannot work in the UK. You must get a British passport (or work visa).
When you enter the country, your visa is stamped according to your level of entry, and this stamp details the permissions you have in the country. (For more info, search Google for "enter the uk on a canadian passport" -- leave the quotes in).
If you enter with a Canadian passport, you are a
traveler and your visa is stamped with "No work or recourse to public funds" -- this will disregard your British citizenship when it comes to working. You have to show proof to your employer that you can work in the country, i.e. you will show them your passport or visa.
Anyway, feel free to let this sink to the bottom of the forums until another confused traveler such as myself needs the info.
* In my case, born in the UK and moved to Canada when I was about 5 years old.
