UK citizenship question..again?

Post Tue Oct 06, 2009 11:24 pm

I am sorry if this has already been discussed but this is a very important topic for me. I am hoping some people can give me insight on how to go about obtaining a British citizenship or at least try to.

I'll give you my details. I was born in Canada in the summer of 1974. My father and mother were both born and raised Canadian but both my grandmother and grandfather (and I think those before them) were born British (those before them were from the UK). For my grandparents they were British when Newfoundland was part of the colony (they were born in the 1920's).

My grandparents lived in Newfoundland until after the war. My grandfather served in the British Royal Navy during the second world war.

From what I can recall, when the vote to decide if Newfoundland should join Canada was made, both of them were in Montreal raising a family. They both lost their citizenship without much choice.

My grandfather eventually was given back his citizenship. British immigration office refused him at first. He decided to write to the Queen. British immigration contacted him shortly after, apologized and said in the letter (in different wording) that their change of mind were influenced by a higher power (he was eternally grateful to her for this). He spent many of his remaining years in Britain before coming back home to Newfoundland to die.

Sorry to ramble on but the short of it is, what can I do to obtain citizenship in the UK and yet retain my Canadian status?

To me it is a matter of feeling complete. I was raised in a very British household and have always been proud to be Canadian but yet I have always felt a strong connection to the UK and hopefully I will live there one day.

Additional which I neglected to mention earlier: My grandfather and grandmother originally British are the parents of my father (who as I said was born in Canada). I also have no criminal record in Canada or anywhere else.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

if you're attempting to get status in the UK based on your grandparents birth place, you will need their birth certificates, and then you can apply for an Ancestry Visa. After a few years living in the UK with that, you can apply for citizenship.

Google "UK Ancestry visa" and you'll find the information. You can also email the British consulate in Ottawa.
