UK girl wants to marry Canadian guy

Post Wed Jul 13, 2011 6:24 am

Hello, I'm sorry I know this is heavily covered but I don't know where to start.

Myself and my finace are from Hong Kong, but I am a UK citizen and he is a Canadian citizen. We met and started dating in the UK 8 years ago during university. After uni, he was working under a Youth Mobility visa. This expired in the end of Jan 2011 and now he's back in Hong Kong and I'm still here is London.

Ideally I'd love to be married and be with him in the UK. What do we need to do? How does his work permit need to be considered?

Would it be better to marry in the UK as opposed to Hong Kong and then registering our marriage documents in the UK?

I'm quite confused. Please help!

Hello,

I'm not sure if this will help or if this is even completely accurate to your particular situation, but I'd like to offer some advice if I can because whenever I have posted anything on this site I am always very grateful for a reply...

Normally, if you want to bring your fiance to the UK to get married, he would need to get a fiance visa, which would allow 6 months in the UK for the express purpose of getting married. He would not allowed to undertake work during this time. Then, he (with you as his sponsor) must apply for a marriage visa.

However, some visas allow for a change over from one catagory to another, although i am not famililar with which ones definitely allow this.

In Canada, no special visas are required and you don't have to be a resident to get married here. You and your Canadian boyfriend would simply have to obtain a marriage licence in the province of your choosing. My boyfriend/soon-to-be-fiance is from England and I am Canadian, and we will be getting married here in Canada so we've looked into the particulars.

Is getting married in Canada at all practical for you and your boyfriend? It might be something to consider, if you haven't already...

Best of luck to you both!
