Hi all,

My hubby has booked off the last week in August and we want to do a break here in the U.K. Any suggestions for a nice spot? We are near Oxford so very central in terms of getting anywhere. I was thinking of a beach/coast holiday but don't want to end up anywhere tacky/cheezy/ridiculously overcrowded! Does anybody have hints for a gem of a place to visit? We would be bringing our dog as well and we have four kids!

Thanks,
Laura Smile

I have a friend who pops down to Kent quite regularly and spends some time on the coast near there. She says it's beautiful and the places she stayed didn't sound like they were crowded or cheesy at all. Unfortunately, I don't have any more detail than that.

I think you might be hard pressed to find a beach/coast holiday in England that isn't crowded and touristy. The English sure love beaches (as I discovered when I took a holiday in Northern Ireland with all English people and was forced to stop at EVERY. SINGLE. BEACH.)

Sorry I have no more input about a good family spot for a holiday. I thought the Lake District near Manchester was lovely, but I have no idea if it's great for kids. I also thought Stratford Upon Avon was beautiful, but VERY crowded. York was cute as a button with a gorgeous cathedral, a charming old skewed-building area called The Shambles and an open air market. That said, those were all just daytrips, so I don't know what they're like to spend any time in.

Some help I am, eh? Best of luck to you!

What about the Devon, Dorset or Cornwall coast. The kids could learn to surf and the country side is lovely. If you want to go a bit further north then Loch Lomond in Scotland is a really nice area. If you want to stay away from tacky then don't go to Blackpool, Skagness or Brighton, although I have been to all of them and had a great time it may not be what you are looking for.

Anglesey.

Beautiful coast AND wild horses on a little island.
