UK National Health Service Coverage for Right of Abode

Post Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:47 am

I am a retired Canadian Citizen with a Certificate of Entitlement (Right of Abode) to live in the UK. We are applying for my husband to be issued a Leave to Remain visa because we would like live in the UK for a year and indulge in our hobbies of hiking and photography.

What I need to know is what if any coverage we are entitled to under the National Health Service. We are in good health but at our age private insurance is very expensive for extended periods and as far as I can tell we cannot retain our OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) while travelling out of the country for an extended period.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

outside of the province basically for 7-months, then your provincial health coverage will expire.

During the time away on the basis that you are considered resident in Canada then the provincial health plan will cover you while you're out of the country

Example: extended holiday & you need health care. I think that you may need to pay the bill & claim it when you get home. Suggest you read the following link as well if need be contact OHIP

For the UK National Health services (NHS) please read the following links - this I think will answer most of what you are asking. There are recipricol agreements in place which allow you to receive treatment in the UK. If you are both resident without restictions, then say that you will be OK to receive health care & prescriptions while you are in the UK

you may want to before you go over to contact the NHS directly in the UK

- they are very helpful, let them know what you're planning on doing
