Uk right to abode versus UK passport

Post Sat Oct 17, 2009 12:47 am

Hi,

I've finally figured out that I qualify for UK right to abode certification, through my UK born mother. I'm now trying to understand if a) that means I'll automatically qualify for a UK passport and b) if so (or if I do qualify for a passport some other way), am I better to hold a UK passport or will the right to abode certification give me the same benifits??

Also, does anyone know if this (me holding UK right of abode or UK passport) could benifit my partner (who doesn't qualify for these) while we're away in anyway? We're not looking to move perminantly, just to travel and work for a couple of years...

Thanks!

If you enter UK with right of abode, and then later naturalise, your UK citizenship is considered 'otherwise than by descent'. If you get UK passport now, your UK citizenship would be "by descent".

UK cit 'by descent' is not automatically passed to your children. 'otherwise' is.

There are of course immediate advantages if you get your UK pasport right now, but if your partner can move with you to UK by other means than sponsorship by you, you might want to persue these first.
