UK to Work

Post Sat May 22, 2010 8:13 am

Hi everyone.

I plan on relocating to the UK to live and work in the Social Work field.
I am applying through HCL Canada using the Youth Mobility Scheme.
Has anyone used this recruitment agency before? If so, how was it for you?

I am currently working out the details and applying for the GCSS.

My question is re: driver's license. I have my G1 (theory) and have to go to driving school and do my road test for the G2. Does anyone know how long one must wait before getting a full G liscence. My licence expires August 2012 and I am moving to UK in July or August. I need to drive to get a job in UK in social work. Is it worth getting my license here and trading it in for UK license??? (considering its the other side of the road).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

I am a bit confused with the drivers license. Do you have only a learner's permit? Or do you have your driver's with additional qualifications? Sorry I dont know what G1 etc are?

But when I moved here I was allowed to drive in the UK for one year Manual or automatic. But after that year I had to exchange my licence over. In the UK they have 2 separate licenses, 1 for manual and one for automatic's. As I could not prove I took my driver's test in a manual I had to exchange my drivers for a full automatic license. So I cant drive a manual, even though I could have for the first year upon arrival!! I didnt drive over here right away. I was just a passenger, learning from everyone else! Its daunting at first driving on the other side of the road, and all the roundabouts, but its all easy now. You could get your canadian license and exchange it later on. That way you could get some driving experience with an instructor over here?
Hope that helps?

Thanks for the advice. G1 is a learner's permit once you've passed your theory. You then have to take driving classes then take the road then there's a 1 yr wait before you can take your road test for the Full G license. I went to the ministry of transportation and I cannot drive in the UK without a full CDN license which I won't have when I get there.

I also thought of just learning there cos i'll be confused learning here then learning there not long after.. However I may just take the lessons and classes so that i can have G2 licence for 5 yrs before having to take the test. I will have to research on UK licence and driving in canada. :S

Loads of thanks for your help.x
