Under-the-radar travel spots

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Under-the-radar travel spots

Post Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:35 pm

This article-- bit.ly/1L0K9 -- has some great suggestions for uncharted travel destinations in Canada.

I'm an avid traveller myself, and am always on the lookout for non-touristy locales.

Can anyone offer any more suggestions?

Well it's not that non-touristy but the north side of Lake Thun in Switzerland would be one of my recommendations, pick one of the villages away from all the Japanese tourists in Interlaken.

Coeur D'Alene, ID is also a nice place to visit, there is a hotel there right on the lake which is a bit of a tourist trap but there are other places to stay.

I used to like Vero Beach, FL but I'm not sure what it's like now, haven't been for years.

Bangor, Northern Ireland is quite a nice seaside town. There's quite a lot to do in Northern Ireland actually but people generally don't think of it as a tourist destination.

I love the North-west of Tunisia (N. Africa). Though Tunisia as a whole is a very touristy country, towns like Tabarka, Ain Drahem, and Jendouba have a lot of culture to offer without all the tourists. In Tabarka there are beautiful beaches and ancient forts to explore. You can even fly in to this town. Ain Drahem takes you up into the mountains -- cooler temps than the rest of the country-- and you can get some incredible deals on olive wood products. Tunisians stop in Ain Drahem specifically for a drink from the "fountain of youth" a natural mountain spring that runs 24/7 with some of the best tasting water around. Then in Jendouba you meet very friendly people and a region wide souk (market) on Wednesday mornings. From here you are also just a 10 minute taxi ride from Bella Regia -- one to the most amazing sites of Roman ruins in all of North Africa (certainly among the top 3 in Tunisia). You can also spend a lovely afternoon at Montezeh -- scenic little cafe nestled in the trees and hills (popular among locals for special dates and family relaxation!) It can be a truly perfect non-touristy holiday!
