Unmarried partner and student moving to UK

Post Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:03 am

Hi,

I am a Canadian moving to London for post graduate school. I will be applying for a Student Visa. Is my girlfriend (also Canadian and common-law of 2 years, no problem proving that) able to come with me as an unmarried partner and obtain her own visa and also be able to work? From the UK visa website it sounds like an unmarried partner may come if I am settled or plan to be settled in the UK, but I do not know if this counts for a student. If this method does not work, what are the other alternatives for her to come and live with me and be able to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

google UK CISA - they're a non profit with the remit of assisting international students; I'm quite sure they have an information leaflet on this situation.

This is a quote for the official UK visa website:
Will my husband, wife or civil partner be allowed to work?
Your husband, wife or civil partner will be allowed to work in the UK if we give you permission to stay in the country for at least twelve months.

see here:
UK Visa website

Hope this helps
