Unrelated degree applying as CSA, what are my chances?

Post Sun Mar 21, 2010 11:16 pm

Hello,

I've spent several hours reading many very useful posts on this forum and I have learned a great deal. I have a question of my own, though, that I'd like some advice / opinions on from anyone who has had similar experience.

I am in the process of applying for jobs right now in the US, as a computer systems analyst. I have a B.A. (4 year university degree) but my major was Philosophy (yes, I know, how stupid of me  ) I did not take any courses in computer science while in university.
Anyway, I was lucky enough to get a job shortly after graduating as an ERP Implementation Specialist (Business Analyst / Project Manager). I have 5 years of experience at this company.

My question is: How likely am I to get a TN-1 with 5 years experience and a B.A in an unrelated field?

Also, I noticed on another thread someone mentioned this: "The hardest ones to get are Systems Analyst and Management Consultant because the manual has specific warnings about those two categories in it." Does anyone know what are the specific warnings about Computer Systems Analyst in the manual?

agnelson, could you specify what you are basing your answer on? Is that just an assumption or do you have a source or reference? thanks

CSA requires a realted degree, or a diploma and 3 years experience. Your experience cannot make up for lack of degree.

I see, would a 1 year program in Computer Science at a local Community College + 5 years experience suffice?

ex: Database Administration (Oracle 10g DBA) LEA.AT

This program is aimed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to manage and maintain an Oracle database and to prepare the student for the Oracle 10g Certification exams, Microsoft SQL 2005 Certification exams and the Sun System Administration (UNIX) Certification exams.

I really appreciate your replies. thanks.

:( Alright, what would it take? What is the minimum required? 2 year degree, 3 year degree, 4 year degree? Masters?

A Bachelor's degree in a related field,
OR
a 2-year North American diploma in a related field plus three year's related experience (you have that part).

This is the standard requirement for almost ALL TN categories.
