Unskilled- Just want to work for 4 months. Please Help

Post Mon Aug 09, 2010 9:53 pm

Ok here's my situation,

My boyfriend's job is sending him to the U.S for training for 4 months. I would like to go with him. However, I couldn't imagine not doing anything and would like to work while I am there. I'm not in school nor do I have a degree or diploma. I have been working as a manager for a company for 4 1/2 years. We would be there for a maximum of 4 months and still have a car lease and will be paying for our apartment in Canada.
Is there any way I could possibly work??

Thanks.

Almost certainly no. If you need to fill your time, maybe try volunteering?

If you do decide to volunteer, make sure you are getting absolutely no compensation for your work. Even if you were to get free room & board (for example) in exchange for volunteering, CBP considers that to be compensation and working illegally. It might just be easier to tell them you are going to visit a friend but be sure to show ties to Canada or they might not let you in the country.

No, there is no way to do this. And you're going to have a hard time coming with him due to them ripping you for ties to Canada. They will want to be sure you're not going with him and anchoring there in a permanent job.

Another tangible solution is getting married before you go. As his wife, you will get a derivative from his work visa. Now it does not mean you'll be able to work (but it might, depending what kind of visa he's on) but at least you wont get hassled crossing the border with him and leaving Canada for several months.

You can just do a quick wedding at the court house, 15 minutes and about $50. Easy peasy. Or you can just date long-distance for 4 months if marriage is not in the cards. 4 months is not that long.

Good luck with everything! I'm sure you'll find a solution that works best for you :)

The only way for her to get work status would be for him to be going down on J status. Even then it would take 2-3 months to get her J2 EAD, in which time she would be coming back to Canada.

Stay in canada, keep your job, and see each other over the net.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably just end up volunteering my time...as I don't see it neccessary to have a 15 minute wedding, and we have a place to stay that is provided by his work. I'll just say i'm visiting and getting away from canadian winter.

I agree that you won't have any problems crossing border -- no more than he will-- so there is no need for marriage for that reason.
