I have been living with a Canadian about 6 year in the USA. He is almost retirement age and has been here on a TN visa. He has worked about 30 years from Canada in the USA and moved here over 10 years ago. We have lived together 5 years. He has a SS# and is a Scientist/Engineer/High Tech Specialist. I was born in the USA and lived in Canada as a child for 16 years, worked and had a SSI number during that time.
We are now getting married. We plan to marry in the USA and need to know what to do to make it legal in Canada. We both have current passports. He is currently the main income provider, so his status is most important.
In our situation what is the easiest route to not have any problems. He wants a green card and I want a...moose card?
The eventual goal: We want to establish residency in both countries and own property in both.
CANADA SIDE:
1.) What do we do about making the marriage legal in Canada and can this be done from the USA?
2.) Does having a SSI in my past help any in regaining it and should I apply for a copy of it?
3.) I have a few debts that have been charged off. Should I file bankruptcy before applying to Canada of just not worry about that?
4.) What is the easiest way for me to have medical care in Canada?
USA SIDE:
1.) Should we get married and then get this paperwork straight here before going back? This seems to be the consensus.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
