US children canadian mother

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

US children canadian mother

Post Thu May 21, 2009 9:22 pm

I am a Canadian citizen with a permanent residency status in the US. I have 2 children that were born in the US but I would like for them to be Canadian citizens. I am planning on moving back Canada in the next 2yrs. What do I need to do in order for them to become Canadian citizens. Their father is a US citizen.

Also their father and I are not married but living together and we are all planning on moving to Canada. Will we have to get married in order for me to sponsor him?

Thanks in advance for your help

Canada recognizes common-law marriages, you can sponsor him to enter Canada, have a look at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/English/immigrate/ ... spouse.asp

All the stuff to do with kids changed recently but it's pretty straightforward in your situation, IIRC. They basically are already Canadian citizens, it's all on the CIC website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenshi ... enship.asp

The main problem is if your kids have children abroad, they won't be Canadian citizens.
Steve.
