I am American born and raised, husband is Canada and we have be married for years. We've been living back and forth between US and Vancouver,BC and recently discussed completing my immigration and residing in Canada.

However, we just discovered I'm pregnant (about 8 weeks) and haven't started the immigration paperwork yet. I need advice and suggestions on what to do first, etc and if they are ways of expediting anything. We really want to have the baby in Canada through Canada Healthcare (Medical Plan). And also get there as soon as we can so I can start getting proper prenatal care. I don't have health insurance in the US (surprise, surprise) Thank you for any advice.

Enter Canada and adjust status to permanent resident I suspect, but it does take awhile. I seem to recall my friend in Burnaby saying it took around six months for her husband to adjust status.

Actually, the quicker route is to file "outland", which is usually completed in less than 9 months. An "inland" application usually takes more than a year for some unfathomable reason.

Check out www.roadtocanada.com for info about immigration to Canada.

I live in Toronto and there are medical clinics for immigrants or Canadian without OHIP or expired Health cards. It is free of charge. You may want to inquire in BC if it is available. Call 211 Toronto and ask is there is a community service number in that province. Hope this helps. I used their services for Dental while I was on maternity leave. They also have free pre natal care.
